Media Day Report: Newton anxious for return
After nine months of sometimes excruciating rehabilitation, Syvelle Newton will return to the football field Saturday night close to 100 percent healthy.
Newton suffered a torn Achilles tendon last October against Vanderbilt and missed the final five games of the season.
Newton has been cleared by USC doctors for full participation in practice, head coach Steve Spurrier said Monday during his annual Media Day press conference.
"Syvelle did the running drills that Coach Smith has them do right there at end of summer workouts and Syvelle made his times," Spurrier said. "He's ready to go."
Newton acknowledged Friday that his rehabilitation was extremely difficult at times and that he came close to giving up on several occasions. He spent some time this summer running with the USC track team.
