Thompson, Stafford out; others step up at camp
Although five-star wide receiver Deonte Thompson of Belle Glade, Fla., Glades Central, and LaGrange, Ga., standout defensive end D.J. Stafford didn't make it to the Plains for Auburn's first of two 7-on-7 passing camps, there were still a handful of top prospects on-hand Friday afternoon in the 20-team tournament.
Thompson, who was recently tabbed as one of the top 27 players in the country by Rivals.com, stayed at home as he is prepared to take the ACT Saturday morning. Stafford didn't attend because it's a skill-position only camp, but is scheduled to be in Auburn next weekend for the Tigers' two-day senior camp.
With the talented duo missing, along with Glades Central's other standout wideout Taurus McKinley not attending because of injury, Memphis (Tenn.) Wooddale wide receiver Roderick Davis, Glades Central defensive backs Johnnie Lee Dixon and Damien Berry, and a handful of underclassmen stole the show.
