Spurrier: It's full speed ahead for Newton
When Syvelle Newton suffered his season-ending torn Achilles tendon injury while scoring a touchdown against Vanderbilt in late October, few could have realistically foreseen that the Marlboro County native would return for his senior season in 2006.
But it appears now that not only will Newton come back this season, he'll be running around the football field at full speed when fall camp opens in early August.
"Syvelle Newton is coming around well from his Achilles injury. Right now the team doctors and trainers think he'll be at full speed by August," Steve Spurrier told an overflow crowd at The Cinema in Orangeburg Monday night during the next-to-last stop on the annual Gamecock Club tour.
It is the most emphatic statement by Spurrier this spring about the prospects of Newton playing in 2006.
