Bulldogs Healing Wounds; Starting Game Week
Mississippi State has been pretty beat up as of late. The Bulldogs have been playing with a less-than-healthy Ladarius Perkins at running back, P.J. Jones at defensive tackle and Jamerson Love at corner. On top of that, MSU had their starting quarterback Tyler Russell go down in the opening week with a concussion and he's just now getting back to playing shape. They've had two season-ending injuries to starters as right guard Justin Malone and safety Jay Hughes ended their year in game one. Needless to say, it's all hands on deck now.
"One person goes down and the other person has to step up, that's football," defensive tackle P.J. Jones said. "Injuries are going to happen you just have to be ready for your moment. Coaches always tell those backup guys, 'You're a one." Everybody is a one because you never know when the next play will be your time to go in."
Jones has been a key missing on the defensive line all season. Sure, he's been in the ball games but even he is not pleased with the injury he's been playing through and he feels that he's nowhere near his full potential because of it. The first six games have been graded by the junior and to mixed results.
"I think I did okay. My ankle bothers me a lot but I try to play through it. I feel like I'm not up to speed but the coaches need me and everyone else is depending on me so I play through it. I'm not playing my best but I can play good enough to contribute. I've been kind of down but that's football."
Thankfully for defensive line coach David Turner and Bulldog fans watching, Jones has had a young phenom step up in his absence in Chris Jones the five-star signee that is still raw in ability but really starting to become what all the experts projected.
"That kid is the closest thing to superman that I've ever seen," P.J. said of the younger Jones. "He is a freak, I've never seen anyone like him. He's just so raw and when he gets his technique down and gets in more with (Matt) Balis, I feel sorry for the guys across from him. He's a beast, I'm not going to lie."
