Shumpert, true freshmen, standout in win
Ashton Shumpert has known for a few days that his name would be called on Saturday and he would not be waiting the season out. What he didn't know is exactly how many snaps he would see on Saturday. So count him surprised that when he entered the game in the second quarter and promptly toted the ball four times.
"I just tried to get as many yards as I can on every carry," Shumpert said about his first series. "I hoped that I would get it, but whatever plays Coach (Dan) Mullen calls I'm going to run it."
The true freshman ran it to the tune of 22 carries for 99 yards and two touchdowns, a day that will always stand out for him as he was the first freshman running back in 10 years to start his career with two TDs.
"My o-line created big holes so I just went hit them like I can do," Shumpert said of his big day. "That first carry, from high school even in little league, you're going to be nervous. It was okay, I got it out of the way early."
Shumpert's name has come up without being mentioned by coaches and players alike since fall camp and from what was seen by the public, everyone knew it would be difficult to keep him off of the field. The transition is still something that he doesn't take likely and he learned to play out practice as if he would be in the game.
