Mississippi State blasts Delta Devils, 14-2
STARKVILLE, Miss., - It was a sloppy game early on for Mississippi State Tuesday evening.
But the third-ranked Bulldogs found their stride in the middle innings to demolish instate opponent Mississippi Valley State 14-2 to remain undefeated at 16-0.
MSU skipper John Cohen yanked both starting pitcher Brandon Woodruff and catcher Nick Ammirati after only one out in the top of the first inning. The Delta Devils had already scored a run on one hit with Woodruff hitting a batter and walking another. Both players were pulled after multiple signs were missed.
"We just did not begin that game on the mound the way that we wanted to," Cohen said. "From that respect, it's a good wake up call. I feel like the rest of the phases of the game were pretty good right from the get-go. We'll go over our game notes, watch film and go over that first inning and be able to learn some things from it."
Reliever Luis Pollorena and regular backstop Mitch Slauter settled things back down for the Diamond Dogs as they cruised the rest of the way.
State smashed out 17 hits in the game led by first baseman Alex Detz's perfect 2-for-2 performance with a double, triple and one run batted in.
Right fielder Hunter Renfroe also had a strong evening going 2-for-3 with his third home run and four RBIs.
"My (fractured) hand is feeling good," Renfroe said. "My swing is feeling really good with my timing. I'm feeling really good at the plate and Coach Cohen is seeing that. He's putting me in the lineup every day and that's all you can ask for."
