BulldogBlitz.com STARKVILLE, Miss., - No. 5 Mississippi State was crowned the champions of the Diamond Classic following a four-game sweep at Dudy Noble Field over the weekend.
The Bulldogs 8-1 victory over Samford completed the sweep on Sunday. MSU defeated both Samford and Purdue twice during the round robin tournament to improve to 9-0 on the year.
"(Samford) can bite you, they're a good club," said MSU skipper John Cohen. "Quite frankly, so is Purdue. I think this is a nice little test for us and a nice little weekend. I think both those clubs are going to do some damage in their leagues this year."
State finished off the weekend with 12 hits on Sunday against Samford. First baseman Alex Detz came through with a 3-for-4 performance with a double and three RBIs.
"I got a couple of fastballs so I just took advantage of those fastballs," Detz said. "I took one up the middle and one the other way. I just tried to take a short swing."
Shortstop Adam Frazier was 2-for-3 with a double, triple and one run batted in. Third baseman Daryl Norris was also 2-for-3 with a pair of singles and an RBI.
