Auburn tames LSU
AUBURN -- Tony Barbee needed less than a minute into the second half Wednesday night to have a hissy fit.
It was warranted.
The Tigers opened with a defensive lapse and a careless turnover that led to an easy bucket. So the head coach called his team together and passed along a stern message that never will be conveyed publicly.
"I don't know if I can use that kind of language," Barbee said.
The message was received clearly. Auburn quickly regained its focus, spent the next 18 minutes hounding LSU on defense and eventually celebrated a 68-63 win.
The Tigers hadn't won a Southeastern Conference opener in six seasons.
This one didn't come easily. Auburn led early, but conceded a 12-2 run late in the half that allowed LSU to move ahead. The visitors led by one point at halftime.
