Bulldogs building confidence
What a difference a week can make.
A week ago Mississippi State had lost four straight and were on the outside looking in on the postseason. Now the Bulldogs have the longest active SEC winning streak at four games and could potentially move into second place in the Western Division with another sweep.
MSU claimed a Thursday thru Saturday sweep at home last week against Tennessee on Super Bulldog Weekend and followed up with a 5-0 shutout of instate rival Southern Miss at Trustmark Park in Pearl on Tuesday.
"I think having extra days off this week has been great," Cohen said. "The Sunday day off was just huge. The kids had much more energy and enthusiasm on Tuesday even though offensively we didn't perform the way that we wanted to. It was a nice win for us on Tuesday and I think our kids feel pretty good about the way we're playing, especially on the mound and defensively right now."
To celebrate their shutout over the Golden Eagles, the State pitching staff was permitted to take batting practice on Wednesday which allowed former dual player Jonathan Holder to showcase his prowess with the stick.
"The thing about the pitcher's (batting practice) is we let them use the old illegal bats," Cohen said. "It's kind of an interesting team study for us because it's just unbelievable how far the ball goes off those bats."
Of course the Bulldog were able to get a pair of two-run homers Tuesday night from Mitch Slauter and Hunter Renfroe bringing their total to just 17 on the year. But do not expect Mississippi State to be swinging for the fences this weekend against Ole Miss.
