Mordecai following father's footsteps

Michael Mordecai has wanted to play for Mississippi State his entire life following in the footsteps of his father Art, lettered as a receiver for the Bulldogs in 1983-84.

With scholarships being at a premium in this class, Mordecai will not be a part of Wednesday's signing class but that will not prevent him from being on the MSU roster in the fall.

The 6-foot-4, 190-pound punter has accepted a preferred walk-on position with the Bulldogs and plans to enroll during the summer.

"I really didn't have very many options," Mordecai said. "I've had a couple of JUCO's offer me and talk to me but State was pretty much my only option but that's the school I've wanted to go to since I was born. My dad played at State and I wanted to be a part of the Bulldog nation. I wanted to grind for my State like Coach (Dan) Mullen says."

Mordecai officially visited the Starkville campus over the weekend and was hosted by Justin Malone, who Mordecai and his Jackson Academy team defeated in the MAIS Class AAA State Championship game in 2010.
