Hokies in the mix for lineman
Virginia Tech extended some new offers on Thursday. The latest goes to a lineman that maintains the Hokies are right in the mix for his services. He breaks it down with Hokiehaven.com inside.
"I got an offer from Virginia Tech," Baltimore (Md.) Boys Latin School offensive tackle Greg Pyke said. "I got it through my coach, I got an email from him yesterday and he was saying that Virginia Tech is very interested in me and they wanted to extend an offer."
The offer came as a surprise to Pyke who had visited the school nearly a month ago.
"I think it's great," he said. "I really liked it when I went down. I didn't know much about the school, but I really liked it a lot.
"My neighbor actually goes to Virginia Tech, he didn't play football, but talks about the academic side and he really likes the school and I really like the atmosphere. It's a football school and coming from such a small school, 300 kids in my high school, I visited the whole campus and it's a great looking campus, it's a great college atmosphere. That's one of those things I definitely want coming from a small school.
"Also, the football facilities and staff are second to none. The offensive line coach, Coach Newsome, I really like him a lot. It's one of those things where he has the offensive linemen over to his house with his wife, I find that cool, it's a big family and everything."
Having just named a top three, what does the offer from the Hokies do to the list?
"That list I'd say is focused, I'd say those were my top three favorites, but now that Virginia Tech has offered I would add them to that list," he said. "It's Maryland, Penn State, Georgia and Virginia Tech.
"I like those four schools. I like those cause I've visited them and seen them. I like that Virginia Tech offered. I didn't know if they would offer or not."
While there is a top four, Pyke maintains those aren't the only schools he is looking at.
"I'm always keeping my options open."
However, do any of the four schools stick out over the others?
"I like them all equally," he said. "They all have their pros and cons. Georgia is SEC football and there is nothing better than SEC football down south. Then, the ACC football and the Big Ten it's a dilemma I have to choose. It's a good dilemma."
As for the plan from here, Pyke mentioned no other plans for visits in the immediate future and discussed a desire to take officials.
"I might take some official visits during or after the season."
Meanwhile, camp starts on August 10th and around lacrosse, Pyke is working hard to get better for this season.
"It's going well, I train every day, Monday through Thursday," he said. "I've been playing lacrosse and that is keeping me busy.
"I've improved, I'm working out with this guy who trains pro players for the Raves and other high school teams. He does a great job. It's hard, but I'm getting better.
"My goal this season is to try to win my conference for my team. I know my team pretty much says I'm the best player on the team, but I want to play well enough to show my teammates I can get stuff like that. I want something they can remember me by."
