TU Scrimmage Report
The University of Tulsa football team held its second scrimmage of the spring on Saturday morning at H.A. Chapman Stadium. The 114-play scrimmage included 52 plays by the Golden Hurricane's first-team unit and 62 plays with the second-team unit. Head Coach Bill Blankenship liked what he saw on the field.
"I was encouraged in a lot of ways today," he said. "I thought offensively we were explosive. We definitely have big play ability. We ran the football well. I liked what I see from Trey Watts and Willie Carter running the football. We're very explosive with Jordan James and Damaris Johnson."
The TU defense didn't shine as much as it did the previous Saturday due to giving up big chunks of yardage against the run, but overall, Blankenship believes the coaching staff will be pleased with what they see on film.
"Defensively, I think we'll find that they were very solid," he explained. "I think we gave up too much on the ground. We want to be firmer there. The best thing our defense did was not give up a lot of big plays. We kept most of it in front, stopped the offense and got off the field several times. I think there's a lot to be positive about on both sides of the ball.
"We got a lot of good things on both sides of the ball to look at. I'm sure when we go and watch the film, we'll have plenty to correct on both sides. I felt good about the whole day."
It appeared early that the Tulsa defense would win the day, as they held the offense scoreless on the first six series. Part of that was due to the absence of junior quarterback G.J. Kinne, who missed the first part of the scrimmage due to a class project that involved the American Heart Association Heart Walk.
In Kinne's absence, back-up quarterbacks Kalen Henderson and Shavodrick Beaver directed the offense. Beaver led two drives covering 40 and 48 yards, but could not get in the end zone. In those two drives, he completed 5-of-9 passes for 34 yards.
