Varnado set to tangle with the Tar Heels
Jarvis Varnado couldn't help but smile when he was asked about playing North Carolina in less than 24 hours.
The 6-foot-9 Mississippi State senior has seen his share of top caliber teams come into Humphrey Coliseum during his four years but admits things are always different when it's a defending national champion.
"It's North Carolina so you've got to be pumped to play them," Varnado said. "They are one of the best programs in college basketball. We are real pumped about playing them. We know they haven't been winning a lot this year but it's still North Carolina. It's going to be real weird to have North Carolina come in here. It's going to be weird but then again it's going to be a challenge for us because we are playing the North Carolina."
The Tar Heels are certainly not having a season up to their standards with just a 17-16 overall record. But Varnado and the rest of the Bulldogs will not let their record cause them to be taken lightly.
"They are a really good team, they've just had some tough losses this year," Varnado said. "They are still a real good team that has a lot of McDonalds All-American guys. We know they can beat anybody on any given day."
MSU won their opening round matchup in convincing fashion over Jackson State 81-67 Tuesday night. It was the Bulldogs fourth game in five days and just one day removed from a heartbreaking one point overtime loss to Kentucky in the SEC Tournament Championship.
