Colt McCoy shares his thoughts on Garrett Gilbert
Colt McCoy said Monday night he's been in contact with Garrett Gilbert since McCoy left campus to begin preparing for the NFL Draft.
Colt said he feels Gilbert is ready to take over the QB reins at Texas:
"I've talked to him a couple times since I've been preparing for the draft, and he's getting ready to go through what I did when I took over for Vince (Young)," McCoy said.
"Vince taught me everything he knew. I was in his hip pocket all the time, studying and watching film, trying to learn everything I could.
"Major (Applewhite) did the same thing for Vince, and I'm trying to do the same thing for Garrett. We've spent a lot of time together, and I think he's really going to be good. I'm excited to watch him play."
What makes you think Gilbert is ready to have success?
"Garrett is going to be fine," McCoy said. "He's a solid quarterback. He's smart. His two best attributes are that he's a winner. You look at his record in high school. He just won football games. Then, he comes here and he was on a 13-0 football team. And you can just see it in his eyes. He's a winner. He's competitive.
"The second thing is he's really smart. He knows football. He's really knowledgeable. He knows how to play the game. He's just got that football savvy. I think he's going to step in and do a great job."
On Gilbert's performance in the BCS National Title Game and how he bounced back in the second half ...
"You can't judge him based on one game," McCoy said. "He's a true freshman who hardly played at all. To be able to step in and do what he did, I thought was tremendous. He had us in the game with six minutes left in the fourth quarter. That's a tribute to him. He's going to be fine. I'm excited to watch him play."
