Bennett takes in Cotton Bowl, solidifies commitment
Bryon Bennett made things pretty clear this week.
The Madison (Central), Miss., defensive tackle is committed to Ole Miss, but that pledge was less than 100 percent right after a recruiting trip to Texas Tech.
However, Bennett traveled to Dallas to watch the Rebels in the AT&T Cotton Bowl this past weekend, and following his return to the Magnolia State, Bennett updated the strength of his commitment.
"I'm going to Ole Miss as long as they have a spot for me," Bennett said. "I love how they play defense, and the Cotton Bowl was more proof of that. I'm ready to be over there and get started."
Bennett viewed the Rebels' 21-7 victory over Oklahoma State with his father and teammates Carlton Martin and Tobias Singleton. Martin, a four-star defensive tackle, is also committed to Ole Miss, and Singleton will be one of Ole Miss' top targets at wide receiver for the 2011 class.
The trip solidified Bennett and Martin, and it also gave the pair another chance to recruit Singleton.
"Tobias loves (Ole Miss), and was at the house talking about the SEC being up for grabs and playing together over there," Bennett said. "I'm working on him, making sure he knows about the opportunity. We definitely snuck in a little recruiting along the way."
Bennett was scheduled to visit Kentucky the weekend of Jan. 15, but he has cancelled that trip due to the retirement of Wildcats coach Rich Brooks. However, he is still planning to visit Syracuse this weekend, likely with Martin.
"I watched Syracuse when I was younger, and it's a cool part of the country," Bennett said. "I played with them on video games and stuff, so I have a curiosity about it. It'll be a cool trip."
Bennett will finish up official visits Jan. 22-24 with his trip to Oxford, Miss., to see Ole Miss one last time before National Signing Day.
"It's been a fun experience, and you just hope you've made the correct decision for your future," Bennett said. "I'm confident in how things have worked out."
Ole Miss is recruiting the three-star, 6-foot-2, 250-pounder to move out to defensive end at the next level.
Bennett also holds offers from Mississippi State, Baylor, Arkansas, Texas Tech, Southern Miss, Oklahoma and Michigan State.
